EDITORIAL

Our rather starved appearance this week is due to the fact that "our" typist is leaving. The resultant burden on an already over-worked department has encouraged us to hold over some bulky material.

We would like to take this opportunity of thanking Miss Noreen Hudson for her help, and wishing her well in her new job.

AROUND THE HOSPITAL

GALA DAY PLANS

Another meeting of the Working Party responsible for planning the new-style Gala Day took place on Wednesday, March 14th.

Among the attractions planned for the Gala, which is to be held on June 16th, are tractor rides, sideshows, and "It's a Knockout" contest, a Carnival Dance, and a Carnival Queen, who will he chosen at a dance to be held on May 11.

The Carnival Queen's duties will be to preside on the day. Everyone in the hospital is eligible, and entry forms can be had from Social Therapy. Your favourite dance gear is all the costume you need.

SMALLER ROLE FOR WIGAN COMMUNITY PROJECT

A Wigan project set up to help local old folk is to finish in its present form.

This was the decision of the third annual meeting held at Wigan Town Hall - just two years since the first exploratory meetings organised by the Wigan branch of International Voluntary Service.

Diminishing receipts and increased payments, internal problems, and most important of all, a shortage of volunteer support, both from individuals and from existing voluntary organisations, were contributory factors in the gradual running down of the project - named Operation Umbrella.

Towards the end of last year, officials of the project decided to tackle one area at a time and leaving a "miniUmbrella" behind.

However, in only one area - Gidlow - is Umbrella anything like representative, Everywhere else the operation has been grinding to a halt for some time, but in Gidlow there have been a number of meetings and, with the help of the Deanery High School and others, there are now 12 street wardens, some covering more than one street in the Gidlow district.

Due to a decline in the project's finances, it will be necessary to close the Operation Umbrella office in Market Street, Wigan, and all inquiries will be referred to the Social Services Department in Hewlett Street. However, a committee has been elected to complete the Gidlow exercise, and, if additional support and enthusiasm is forthcoming, members hope to start the exercise in another district.
