The inspiration for this website was an evening spent with friends Terry and Jean Flaherty and Alan and Linda Ravenscroft, perusing the pages of copies of the hospital magazine "The Standard" which had languished for thirty years in my attic.
At Jean's suggestion I have transcribed the pages of the magazine to the web. After twelve months the task is over. Not a task really, for each issue brought back welcome memories, names and faces. Indeed, some parts were remembered as if written yesterday. And, of course, there was sadness to read the contributions of those who are no longer with us; written in the prime of their life, and how I wish to remember them.
The Standard was launched following a Hospital Advisory Service visit to Winwick in 1970. This followed a long period of conflict between members of the Winwick branch of the Confederation of Health Service Employees and hospital management over staffing levels and care standards culminating in a meeting between both parties at Liverpool Regional Hospital Board offices. The magazine followed the H.A.S. report on Winwick and was recommended by them as part of a process of restoring morale and collaborative working.
It was produced at a time when psychiatric hospitals and the health service itself were undergoing major transition, and its pages give an insight not only into the lives of patients and staff at this significant time, but the changes taking place and the responses elicited.
The magazine was co-edited by a manager and a staff representative receiving material via a Publications Committee - a sub-committee of the Joint Consultative Committee. It was produced by the administrative staff in Hollins House under the direction of Cordelia ("Corrie") Naisby and the staff and patients in the hospital's Industrial Therapy Department, and appeared weekly between 1971 and 1974.
